Winnifred Brown

July 27, 1916 — February 18, 2019

Florence Anna Winnifred Brown (Winnie), age 102, passed away at Sanford Hospital on February 18, 2019 in Fargo, ND.

Winnifred was born on July 27, 1916 in Minot, ND. to Hans and Bertha (Hogan) Goth. She was the second of eight children born to this union. Her father was a flour miller and they moved through-out North Dakota where he operated different mills.

She graduated from Dunn Center High School in 1934. She then worked for her father as his bookkeeper. She married her high school sweetheart, Claude Brown, on April 3, 1937 at Normanna Lutheran Church in Dunn Center, ND. They were married 43 years and farmed and ranched together on the Brown family homestead for 40 years.

She was an active volunteer and served as President of the Ladies Aid, a member of Eastern Star, Worthy Matron and Associate Mother Advisor of Rainbow Girls, a 4-H leader, member of the State Farm Bureau Women's committee from District #9, and was active in Cowbells.

She was an accomplished seamstress. She sewed Claudia’s wedding dress as well as those of the wedding party. She enjoyed needlework, reading and attending her grandchildren's activities. She hosted many visitors to their home where they were always welcomed and served a delicious meal.

She and Claude traveled extensively in their motor home from Alaska to Mexico. They spent time in Texas with friends and in Florida with their daughter, Glenda and family. They enjoyed their yearly trips to Medora.

Winnie is survived by two sons, Grant (Linda) Brown of Towner, ND and Douglas Brown of Larimore, ND; daughter, Claudia of Fargo, ND; 9 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude; her parents, Hans and Bertha Goth; her daughter, Glenda Lotow; grandsons, Jason and Darren Lotow; five brothers, William, Theodore, Wendell, Weston, and Arlie Goth; and two sisters, Irma Hovden and Dorothy Kubik.

Winnie was cremated and will be buried alongside her husband in the Dunn Center Cemetery in Dunn Center. A family memorial service will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Dunn Center Cemetery or to a charity of your choice.
