William Riegel, 96, of Fargo died Friday, December 16, 2011 at Sanford Health, Fargo. William was born June 20, 1915 to John and Katherine (Mauck) Riegel, near Willa, ND. Early in childhood, the family moved to a farm near Mott, ND. William graduated from Mott High School in 1935 with good knowledge of mathematics, which benefited him greatly during his working years. In 1939, William began working at various jobs in Fargo, where he met his future wife, Eunice Smaaladen. They married on May 9, 1942 and shortly after that, William was drafted by the U.S. Army Medical Corp. Late December 1945, he returned to the U.S. after serving his country. Shortly after his return, he went to work at Northern States Power Co., where he retired in 1980. He remained involved in the community working for the Fargo Senior Commission and also as a volunteer for the Meals on Wheel program. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, serving as treasurer and financial secretary in 1964, 65 & 66. He was also a member of the Fargo American Legion, Gilbert C. Grafton Post No. 2, for over one half century. He took great pleasure in watching his grandchildren playing sports. William is survived by his wife, Eunice; two sons, Darryl (Karen) Riegel, Fargo, ND and Dennis Riegel of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Matthew (Megan) Riegel, Fargo, ND and Joshua (Mandy) Riegel, Beulah, ND; sister, Frieda Schauer, Bethany Homes, Fargo; also, four great-grandchildren, Mason, Greyson, Emma and Averie Riegel. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, David; brothers, Jacob, Fred, Emmanuel and Leopold and two sisters, Bertha, Lydia. Funeral: Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 2:00 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND. Visitation: Tuesday, December 20, 2011 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, ND, followed by a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.
