Virginia “Billie” Ruf was born June 18, 1919, in Vermillion, SD to William and Annetta (Scott) Ruf. Billie married Henry “Hank” Grefe in Omaha, Nebraska in November of 1940. They lived in Omaha before moving to Fargo, ND in 1953.
Billie was an avid tennis player and enjoyed golf, bowling and bridge. She was an active member of the Fargo Country Club, PEO, NDSU Team-Makers and regularly attended Bison football and basketball games. Billie enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their lake cabin on Turtle Lake, MN. She never missed her grandsons sporting and musical events.
Billie died peacefully, surrounded by family, at Touchmark at Harwood Groves, Fargo, on Thursday, January 17, 2019. She was 99 years old. She is survived by her husband of 78 years, Hank Grefe; her daughter Jan (Steven) Ferguson of Alexandria, MN; grandchildren Chad (Kristi) Ferguson of Alexandria, MN, and their children Michael, Kebyn, Daniel, Tyler, Megan, Eddie, Marcella, Brianna, and Ava; Todd (Molly) Ferguson of Moorhead, MN, and their children Lucia, Clare, Kilian, Therese, and Cormac; and Scott (Angela) Ferguson of Cary, NC, and their children Elle Louise and Otto.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and daughter, Gay Grefe.
The family would like to thank the Touchmark assisted living staff and Hospice of the Red River Valley for the loving care they provided for Billie.
