Violet Sandeen was born November 19, 1923, to Andrew and Gertie Sandeen in Dale, MN. She was one of seven children and grew up in Winnipeg Junction. She married Melvin Skarphol on August 14, 1948, in Hawley, MN. Melvin and Violet moved to Fargo, where they raised their eight children.
Her life was Motherhood, managing a family of eight while enabling her husband Melvin of 42 years to build one of Engineering News Record's Top 400 general contracting firms, Twin City Construction. For Violet, moving was a constant; as new homes were constructed, babies arrived! She loved and was loved, setting an example of compassion and care for all whom she embraced. Always willing to give all and take one for the team if needed. Her infectious hearty laugh will stay with us. We will cherish her love, joy, and long-lasting hugs. Our world was blessed because she was our Mother.
She was affectionately known as "Soft Grandma at the Lake," aka "Softie" by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time at her lake home on Pelican Lake in Minnesota. Violet found her greatest joy in being surrounded by her large family. She was a woman of inspirational, immeasurable faith. She was her family's Guardian Angel here on Earth. We are certainly blessed knowing she will continue to lovingly watch over all of us from above, likely singing "Jesus Loves Me" and "You Are My Sunshine." She was welcomed, with open arms, into the Lord's home on June 4, 2023, at the age of 99.
Violet was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Gertie; husband, Melvin; her brothers, Arnold and Clayton (Patty); her sisters and their spouses, Mabel (George), Myrtle(Olaf), Pearl (Irving), Inez (Bud).
Violet will be greatly missed but forever loved by her eight children, Charles (Linda), Steven (Patti), Paul (Rose), David (Kim), Debra (Bob) Bang, John (Nancy), Mary (Troy) Wolf, Matt (Erin); 15 grandchildren, Chris (Tricia), Courtney (Jon) Qual, Andrew (Jenny), Liz Hannum, Emily (Ben) Martello, Logan, Austin (Ashley), Jack Bang, Adam, Nick (Kara), Gabe (Maia), Lexy (Aaron) Johnson, Spencer (Holly), Taylor (Jenny), Sydney (Kyle) Laverty; 24 great-grandchildren, Hannah, Addison, Harper, Quinn, Ellery, Carson, Leah, Gabby, Lexy, Nic, Grace, Bailey, Karter, William, Maxwell, Haakon, Colette, Winifred, Wolfbaby, Aurora, Brooklyn, Ryland, Lyla, Claire; and four great-great-grandchildren, Berkley, Oliver, Hadley, and Lily. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorials preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley and the New Life Center in Fargo.
