Vernon "Buzzy" Edward Almlie was born to Edward and Esther (Wager) Almlie on January 16, 1935, in St. Cloud, MN. He attended elementary school in Glendorado, MN, then graduated from Foley High School, Foley, MN. He received his bachelor's from Augsburg College, Minneapolis, MN. Next was his master's degree from Minnesota State University, Winona, MN. He earned his doctorate in education from the University of Montana, Missoula, MT, in 1975. He died peacefully in his sleep on June 28, 2024.

He married Marie Annette Talberg in June 1958 at Glendorado Lutheran Church. Marie passed away on April 15, 1992, in Valley City, ND.

He married Glenda Sanford on August 12, 1995, at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND. Glenda passed away on December 24, 2023.

Early in his career, Vern taught at elementary schools in Rochester, Winona, and St. Paul, MN. He became a teaching assistant at the University of Minnesota, Winona; St. Catherine University, St. Paul; and the University of Montana, Missoula. He was the school principal and taught in Belle Creek, Montana. In 1975, the family moved to Valley City, ND where he was a professor of education on the faculty of Valley City State University for over 25 years. He was made Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 2001. During his retirement, he continued to supervise student teachers in the Fargo, ND area. He also drove a school bus for the Fargo School System.

He was active in music and theater throughout his life. He also sang with his family and in church choirs. He was a member of the Valley City Troubadours for 25 years. He was a charter member of the Valley City Optimist Club and served on the Community Theater Board. At Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City, he sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School, and was on the Council. While a member of First Lutheran Church, Fargo, he served on the Property Committee, sang in the men's choir, and was an active member of Helping Hands. Vern and Glenda enjoyed being involved in their church, visiting friends and family, and spending time at their cabin on Little Cormorant Lake in Minnesota.

He is survived by his daughter Ann (Jonn) Strausser, Anamosa, IA; sons, William (Lande) Almlie, Everson, WA and Jurgan Almlie, Ellendale, ND. He is survived by his grandchildren: Matthew, Levi, Shanna, Eleanor and Lillian Iglehart, Isabella Almlie and Kyle Dallman and Elizabeth, John and Mark Almlie. He is survived by his brother Erling Almlie, Minneapolis, MN.

He is also survived by his step-children: Sheryl (Michael) Van Scoy, Duluth, MN, Paul Sanford, and Ken (Darla) Sanford, Fargo, ND, and the step-grandchildren: Hugh, Elise, and William Van Scoy, and Robert, Sean, and Stephen (Toni) Sanford.

He is survived by his sisters-in-law Kathy Olsen, Excelsior, MN and Maria Berlin, St. Cloud, MN, as well as many, many nieces and nephews.

Visitation and service will be held at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, on Saturday, July 13, with visitation starting at 9 am and service at 10 am. Burial at Glendorado Lutheran Church, Glendorado, MN, Saturday, July 20 at 2 pm.
