Velma Thompson, 91, of Fargo, died September 6, 2014, at Bethany on 42nd where she had lived for the past year. Vilma Karolina Rieger was born on November 30, 1922 in Java, South Dakota to Katie and Adolph Rieger. She was very proud of the fact that she started 1st grade at the age of 4, and she graduated from Lemmon High School at the age of 16. In 1941 she was united in marriage in Hettinger, North Dakota, to A. Maynard Thompson at the groom’s parent’s home. She joined her husband who was in the Navy and stationed in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, where twin sons were born in 1942. A daughter was born after the family moved to Moorhead, MN in 1949.
After raising their family in Fargo, Velma had several jobs to keep her busy. She worked as a hostess at the Bowler and Antonio’s Grotto. She enjoyed being active, and it was a perfect job for her. She especially enjoyed her time working at a Moorhead law firm and Fargo Rental. She was a gifted sewer and knitter and shared her crafts with many people and organizations. She was especially fond of her Minnesota Twins and Vikings.
Velma leaves 2 sons and a daughter, Keith (Darlene) Thompson, Rochester, MN; Ken (Judy) Thompson, Nevis, MN; and Susan Stokka, Fargo, ND. She leaves 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She also leaves many friends from University Manor especially Eloise Koering and Jim Illiex. We would like to thank the staff at Bethany for the great care they gave Velma, and we know they will miss her “bounce” down their halls.
