The Honorable Thomas Richard Olson began his life's journey in Spokane, Washington on October 9, 1952, the son of Richard E Olson and Grace (Jothen) he was the oldest of three children. Tom graduated high school from Robinson Armstrong, in 1971. He took on responsibility when needed and it was something he would demonstrate throughout his life. "Say what you mean and mean what you say - remember words can hurt."
His sarcasm was beyond reproach, and yet his quick wit was endearing at the same time. He was a charmer with a definite sense of right from wrong. Integrity and character were cornerstones of his personality. The weeping judge had his own demons which created a soft spot for marginalized people in the community. An absolute passion was his time spent with people in Drug Court and performing many adoptions, a time he cherished. He could be a tough critic of offenders and a great defender of the legal system. While on the bench he strove to make the right decision, recognizing the law was not always infallible. His comment when presented with criticism of the law was "Imagine the world without it".
He loathed violence and this gentle man spent one year in the Lutheran Seminary. Leaving the seminary because he felt the calling was not strong enough. Tom was devout in his faith, and this continued throughout his life.
The William Mitchell College of Law followed his decision to leave seminary. He graduated from law school in 1981.
He married Jane Solien, June 8, 1974. Their children, Emily and Maggie, were a source of pride and happiness. Their well-being and happiness were of utmost importance.
Tom was a partner at the Jeffries, Olson and Flom law firm and of counsel at Johnson, Ramstad and Mottinger law firm. He was a litigator and mediator with a sincere desire to leave a legacy beyond just "saving the insurance companies money." An eventual appointment and election to a judgeship in the East Central Judicial District was the highlight of his career. Tom held this position until a series of unfortunate health issues beginning with COVID began to negatively impact his life.
Tom loved to travel, and he delighted in social events. Putting people first was a skill he honed over the years. He was never too busy nor was the house too unkept to welcome friends or family in. Tom was a humble but proud man. His statement "you may be right" was so calming until we realized he was telling us chances are just as good you are wrong. For a litigator, his dislike for conflict was surprising. Tom loved golf, fly fishing and car racing. He was a fan of the Minnesota Gophers and appreciated opportunities to attend their games. Flyfishing was something he enjoyed with friends and family.
Sandra's son Michael proclaimed Tom "a keeper" from the start and on July 11, 2004, Tom and Sandra married and the Leyland Olson families joined each other to help create the rest of his story. In 2012 and 2013 Mikayla and Madison brought more adventure and happiness when they became a part of the family. Being an older than average daddy to two little girls again showed us what a gift he was to his family and friends. He was not known for his patience but without a doubt he knew how to love unconditionally. Emily, Maggie, Jerilynd, Michael, Mikayla and Madison are a part of a rich personal legacy which surpasses all else. We will miss the Tom and Jeri show.
Tom appreciated order in his life and believed "Everything in its time." On May 24th, 2024, his time came to enter eternal life.
He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Grace Olson (Jothen). In laws Charles and Rosemary Parker (Dahlberg).
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Leyland, children Emily Hatch (Erik), Maggie Hartmann (Eric), Jerilynd Leyland, Michael Leyland, Mikayla Leyland, and Madison Leyland. Sisters Liz Kroschel (Rich), Janet Olson (Dave Wisdorf), Brothers in law Gerald Parker and Gary Parker (Shar Sitter).
Tom is papa to Finley and Simon Hatch and Miles, Jack, and Malia Hartmann. Tom shared his life over the years with nieces and nephews, cousins, and many extended family members. Jacob Adams and Chloe Bakkum are a part of his recent journey.
