Susan Elizabeth Huguelet, 85, received her angel wings on March 2nd, 2019. This amazing woman will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandma, sibling and friend by all who knew her.
Sue was born August 8th, 1933, the second child of eight children born to Theodore and Josephine Lange in Allegan, Michigan. Throughout her childhood, Sue treasured the time spent with her five sisters and two brothers as well as her grandparents. She was very family oriented and the pride and love she took in that was undeniable. Mom & Dad’s porch, the fairgrounds, Little John Lake, and reminiscing about many memories made at “Grandma on the Hill’s” house were cherished.
Sue was always an advocate for education, graduating from Michigan State University along with the love of her life, Joseph Edward Huguelet II – “Cork”. The two wed on August 14th, 1955 and eventually moved to Fargo, ND with their three small children. Here they settled and quickly developed many close friendships with neighbors and colleagues that became like family to her. She was a proud founding member of the “Ladies of Lunch” group for over 50 years, always sharing stories of their adventurous and fun times together.
Volunteering at the Opportunity School in Fargo for many years and teaching second grade for 15 years in the Fargo Public School system, Sue retired from teaching from Jefferson Elementary in 2001. Even though retired, Sue continued her volunteer efforts as she loved helping others. In 2009, Sue was humbled, being recognized by the YWCA as the “Volunteer Service - Woman of the Year” for her work with the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center. She was fun loving, smiley and at times “sassy” with a twinkle in her eye….Everyone who knew her liked her.
Sue was an independent and resilient woman; having lost her husband at a young age in 1977, her faith was undeterred and her commitment to the church unwavering. Because of her convictions, she stayed strong for her kids and years later, her pride and joy became focusing her time on her grandchildren - she was their Number One Fan. Whether watching her grandchildrens’ sporting events, taking family vacations together or spending every summer weekend at Island Lake, she lived for these moments and even in her final days stated, “Everyone I love is here, why would I want to go anywhere?”
Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Cork, her parents, and siblings, Grace Ann Richardson, Barb Washburn, Mary Joan Lange and Ted Lange, along with her brother in law & sisters in law; Gerald Richardson, Wanda Lange and Sue Lange – all of Michigan.
Sue is survived by her three children; Joe (Samantha) Huguelet, Brainerd, MN; Jeff (Kerry Jo) Huguelet, Fargo; and Jamie (Jay) Karlovich, Excelsior, MN; and her grandchildren & great grandchildren; Sara (Erick) Galt – Gabriella & Gisele, Fargo, ND; Josh Huguelet, Fargo, ND; Brittany (Gilbert) Ortega, Tucson, AZ; Luke Karlovich, Louisville, CO; Joey Huguelet, Brainerd, MN and Justine Grover – Mila, Minneapolis, MN.
Sue is also survived by 1 brother, two sisters, and one brother-in-law: Thomas Lange, Allegan, MI; Kathy Lange, Vicksburg, MI; and Gretchen & Ron Wedge, Allegan, MI; and many cherished and loved nieces and nephews.
While we will miss her greatly, we are comforted knowing she was welcomed into Heaven, greeted by a husband who has waited for so long to hug her again, along with a long list of others that were anxiously waiting right behind him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to an Alzheimer’s foundation or a youth educational program would be appreciated.
