In His infinite love and mercy, it has pleased our Heavenly Father to call unto Himself the soul of Shirley Mae Schulz. Shirley died on February 23, 2022, at the St. Catherine's North (Rosewood) Care Center in Fargo, ND, at the age of 84.
Shirley was born on May 5, 1937, to Elias and Martha (Torro) Pesola in Ottertail, Minnesota. She was made a child of God in Holy Baptism at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills, MN, on June 6, 1937. She later confirmed and confessed her Christian faith there in June 1950.
Shirley was a graduate of New York Mills High School in 1955 and then moved to Minneapolis, where she was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company. On April 2, 1960, Shirley married Hugo Schulz at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills. To this union, the Lord blessed Hugo and Shirley with one child, Steve.
They made their home in Edgeley, North Dakota, where Shirley worked as the office manager at the GTA feed plant (now the Cenex-Harvest States) for 35 years. It was well-known in Edgeley, and among all who knew her, that Shirley was blessed with the gift of hospitality. If she cooked it, it was delicious; if she baked it, it melted in your mouth. She never failed to provide a bountiful meal or a scrumptious treat whenever you visited her home. She was happiest when she was serving and spending time with her family and friends. A few years after Hugo's death in 2002, Shirley moved to Iowa and then to Fargo to be closer to her family. She took much pride and joy in her grandchildren and having Grandma close by was an incredible blessing in their lives.
Shirley was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Edgeley, ND, for most of her life, then transferred to Grace Lutheran in Storm Lake, Iowa, and finally Immanuel Lutheran in Fargo. She regularly and joyfully received the gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation that our Lord Jesus delivers to His people through His Word and Supper, and in response to God's great love and mercy for her, Shirley actively served the Lord with her gifts and talents. She was a rich blessing in the lives of those around her, and she will be missed.
Those who remain behind for a while, in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life are her son, Steve, and his wife, Sue of Fargo. Four grandchildren: Michael (Angie), Christiansburg, VA; Katie (Matthew) Mortenson, Rochester, MN; Jonathan, Fargo, ND; and Jacob, Fargo, ND; one great-grandchild, Johann; three sisters and two brothers; beloved nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Hugo, her parents, and her brother Bob.
