On Saturday, August 11, 2018, Shirley Heinen, loving mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, passed away peacefully with her children by her side at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Shirley Catherine Nelson was born in St. Paul, MN to Arden and Eva (Henkels) Nelson on February 21, 1935. She married James (Jim) Peter Heinen in November 1957. They settled in Big Stone City, SD where they farmed and raised their three children. Jim passed away in 1971, and soon thereafter Shirley and her children moved to Moorhead, MN.
As a single mother, Shirley worked hard and provided well for her children, mainly at St. Ansgar Hospital and Concordia College. She also attended college during that time and received her AA degree. Shirley enjoyed horses and horseback riding in her youth, movies, games, and had a tremendous love for cooking, traveling, family gatherings, and spending time with friends.
Shirley is survived by her children, Julia (Peter) Milbery, Huntersville, NC; James Heinen, Fargo, ND; Joel (Rhonda) Heinen, Castle Rock, CO; grandchildren, Nicole (Stephen), Whitney, Jaime, Katie (Brady), Chynna and Chase; great-grandchildren, Kylie and Jace; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
Per Shirley’s wishes there will be no funeral services. The family would like those who wish to honor her to do something that Shirley would enjoy—perform an act of kindness, pet a dog, or tell a joke or story.
