Sarah L Zimmerman

July 31, 1935 — August 6, 2012

Sarah Lily Zimmerman, 77, Fargo, passed away August 6 at Sanford Medical Center.
Sarah Lily Heron was born July 31, 1935, in New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. A Highland dancer and singer, she was a member of the Royal Kiltie Juniors, and travelled extensively throughout France and Germany with a USO performing group. It was in France that she met Wallace Zimmerman of Gackle, N.D., an NCO in the U.S. Air Force. They married April 24, 1954, in New Cumnock, Scotland.

During her 20 years as a military wife, Sarah made a home for her family on air bases in Great Britain, Turkey, Massachusetts, Florida, Arizona and Montana. She also taught Highland dancing in Scotland and Cape Cod, Mass. While her husband served in Vietnam, she opened a Scottish dancing and tap dance school in Jamestown, ND, and also taught dance at Jamestown College. An accomplished seamstress, she also knit and crocheted countless sweaters and afghans, and created other beautiful needlework items that are cherished by her family and friends. Sarah also worked in Minneapolis in 1984 as a member of Sen. Rudy Boschwitz's campaign staff.
Although Sarah was born and raised in Scotland and cherished her Scottish heritage, she was very proud of her adopted home. She often said, "I am a citizen of the United States by choice, not by chance."

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace, and parents John and Margaret. She is survived by son Andrew, Austin, TX; daughters Karen (Jerry) Lippold, Edwardsville, Ill., and Maureen (Warren) Hintz, Fargo, N.D.; grandson David Schultz; brothers and sisters John, Jim, Alec, Maureen, Margaret, Barbara and June, all of Scotland; six step-grandchildren; and 15 step-great grandchildren.

At the end of her life Sarah was blessed to be treated with professional and compassionate care by the staff of the Sanford Palliative Care Unit, and her family asks that any memorials be sent to support that extraordinary ministry to patients and their families.
