Sandi Jean Gustin, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on April 7, 2025, at the age of 66 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on July 10, 1958, in Chicago, IL, to John and Inge Popa, Sandi's family relocated to Southern California when she was a young child. California's sunshine became an integral part of her spirit, and by the definition of the "Beach Boys," she was truly a California Girl at heart.
Sandi grew up in El Monte, CA, and graduated from Arroyo High School in 1977. In 1979, she gave birth to her son, Adam, whom she cherished beyond measure. Her pride in motherhood was unwavering, and she dedicated her life to ensuring Adam's success and happiness.
Known for her radiant energy and compassionate nature, Sandi was described by all who knew her as a "shining light." Her kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone she met. She had a special way of making people feel loved and important, often greeting them with a warm "Hunny" or "Sweetie."
In 2024, Sandi moved to Fargo, ND, to enjoy her retirement years surrounded by family. She quickly embraced her new community and became an avid supporter of the Red River Valley Speedway, Fargo Force hockey, and Bison football. Sandi also found joy working part-time at Marshall's, where she loved spending her paychecks on treasures and forming deep bonds with her coworkers, whom she held in the highest regard.
Though diagnosed with stage 4 cancer on December 27, 2024, with a prognosis of only weeks to months, Sandi's bright spirit never faltered. She continued to find joy in life and faced her challenges with grace and positivity, leaving a legacy of strength and resilience.
Sandi will be deeply missed by her son, Adam (Heather) Dominguez; her grandsons, Ryan Dominguez, Alex McCord, and Dylan Dominguez; her brother, Vic Popa; and her sister, Susan Popa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents, John and Inge; her sister-in-law, Debbie Popa; and her beloved cat, Brooklyn.
In lieu of flowers, Sandi's family kindly asks that donations be made to Hospice of the Red River Valley or Cat's Cradle in her memory.
Sandi's light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who loved her.
