Roy H. Hamer, age 94, of Fargo, ND, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025, at the Fargo VA Health Care System surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025, from 9 AM to 10 AM followed by his 10 AM Funeral Service at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home in Fargo. Burial will be held in Fargo National Cemetery on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at 9 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN or to Fargo VA Health Care System Palliative Care.
Roy Hamilton Hamer was born in Pollock, SD, to Hamilton and Ruby Hamer. He grew up in Harvey, ND, and graduated from Harvey High School in 1949. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army. During the Korean War, He was deployed to Korea where he was a sergeant in a tank company. Later, he was stationed in Germany. After returning home, he attended North Dakota State University and University of North Dakota.
In 1955, he married his childhood sweetheart, Ruth Molsberry. They made their home in Fargo raising their 4 children. He worked for decades in the City Engineer's office for the City of Fargo. During that time, he was part of many flood fights including the flood of 1997 and street paving for the growing city.
After retirement, he and Ruth were able to do quite a bit of traveling including a 3-week trip to South Africa. In 2001, they began wintering in Dunedin, Florida.
Roy's 2 haunts were the public library and the VFW Post #762 Club. He was an avid reader, enjoying westerns and military history. He went to the VFW Club, where everyone knew his name, almost daily. Even after he could no longer drive, he got there by scooter, family, or ride service. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly when grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved. He felt so blessed by his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, parents, siblings, grandson Shawn Teiken, and his cat, Bullet.
Roy is survived by his children, George (Julie) Hamer, Elizabeth (Albert Nelmapius) Schroetke, Susan (Marshall) Korman, and Michael (Beth) Hamer; grandchildren, Bobbi Jo Rohaley, Katie (Logan) Doll, Aaron (Casey) Korman, Emily (Matt) Henning, Ethan Hamer, Owen Hamer, and Kegan (Kelley) Nelmapius; great-grandchildren, Raymond Peters, Wynn Teiken, Ryker Rohaley; Sadie and Olivia Korman; Carter and Parker Henning; Roman, Ezekial, and Isaiah Nelmapius; best friend James Royce Whiteowl, several nieces and nephews and loving friends.
