Roberta B. Petitmaire, 103, passed away Saturday morning, September 8, 2012, at her home in Fargo, North Dakota. She was born June 11, 1909, in Port Chester, New York to Frederick and Lillian [Schweitzer] Beaupain. She graduated first in her class at Wheelock College, Boston, MA in 1930 and completed her B.S. degree at Teachers’ College, Columbia University, New York, NY. Roberta taught elementary school in Port Chester for 37 years influencing many children’s lives.
On April 13, 1946, Roberta married Maurice H. Petitmaire. In Port Chester, they raised two daughters. They retired to West Palm Beach, Florida in 1978. From there she and her husband traveled extensively throughout the world. She was a much loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to many.
Roberta was a multi-talented woman. During her long life, she loved not only her family, but animals, especially her dogs. Also, she enjoyed reading, going to the theater, playing the piano and gardening. Roberta was a prolific letter writer. She expressed herself also through silver jewelry making, needlepoint and leather tooling. She was an avid bridge and card player to the end. Throughout her life, she maintained both grace and generosity.
Roberta is survived by her daughters, Roberta [Douglas] Harnisch of Fargo, ND and Yvonne [James] Charton of Chapel Hill, NC. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brooke [Daniel] Roberts of Boston, MA, John [Rebekah] Harnisch of Stamford, CT and Christopher Charton of Chapel Hill, NC and a great-grandson, Owen Roberts. She is also survived by four nieces and a nephew and four great nieces and five great nephews.
Roberta was preceded in death by her parents, husband, twin sister, Lillian Lade, brother-in-law, Arch Lade, and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Felix and Elizabeth Petitmaire.
The family would like to give special thanks to her two primary caretakers in the last two years and to the staff of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
There will be a Memorial Service celebrating Roberta’s life at Rye Presbyterian Church, Rye, NY with family and friends in the summer of 2013.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to give donations to Hospice of the Red River Valley and/or 4 LUV of Dogs.
