Robert Marvin Lodin Lindquist

July 13, 1920 — October 31, 2017

Robert Marvin Lodin Lindquist was born in Minneapolis on July 13, 1920 to Eric and Emma (Lodin) Lindquist. Most of his childhood was spent in Minneapolis - relocating many times due to evictions during the Great Depression. His childhood experiences instilled in him a great work ethic, a determination to succeed and excel, and a fierce pride in his accomplishments. A junior high teacher took interest in his academic abilities, so despite working full time during high school, Robert graduated with honors from South High School, Minneapolis graduated from the U of M in 1942 with degrees in business administration and mechanical engineering - the first member of his family to attend college. He then pursued his Masters degree in mechanical engineering.

Robert enlisted in the US Navy and served his country during WWII. He was Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the U of M for five years after his discharge from the Navy. On June 11, 1950 he married the love of his life, Mayland Grimm; whom he met at a dance and with whom he shared a beautiful bond for 65 years. Robert was a wonderful, loving, supportive father to 3 very blessed children: Kay, Nancy and Steven. He loved to spend time with them - never missing any event they were participating in. Later, he loved traveling and spending time with them and his grandchildren, in each of whom he took great pride.

Robert was a very active member of, and deacon at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. He served on the school board for Spring Lake Park District 16 for a total of 12 years, four as its Chairman. He was awarded School Board Member of the Year by the state of Minnesota. Robert retired from Northern Ordnance Division of FMC in 1986. Additionally, he had 5 books published, had a patent for and marketed the “Wind Bag” - an inflating device, and had a copyright for a game - “Beeline”.

Because his mental acuity was declining, Robert and Mayland relocated to Fargo Moorhead in January 2006 to be closer to family. While his body remained strong, Robert struggled with Alzheimer’s dementia the last 14 years of his life.

Robert was received into the arms of his Savior on October 31, 2017. He has gone to join his loved ones who have been waiting for him: parents Eric and Emma Lindquist, sister, Evelyn (Henry) Carlson; daughter, Kay (Dennis) Bruns, and his wife Mayland. He is survived by his daughter Nancy (Mark) VanLishout, son Steven Lindquist (Mark Stevens), grandchildren Cammi (David) Acosta, Court Bruns, Erik Bruns, John VanLishout, Amy VanLishout, twin great granddaughters Mnemosyne and Penelope Acosta, 15 nephews and nieces, and many other treasured family and friends.

Robert will be remembered for his great love and devotion to family, his strong faith, his practical jokes and sense of humor, his great support for education, his love of reading, his piles and files of article clippings, his love of music and dancing, his walking, his inability to discard anything, and the ever present pen and notebook in his shirt pocket.

A very special thanks to the staffs of the Fairmont Eventide, the VA and Hospice of the Red River Valley who worked together to make sure that Robert’s last days here on Earth were peaceful.

Memorial gifts will be given to Hospice of the Red River Valley and The Fairmont - Eventide.
