R. L. Mason

Robert Leon Mason, 91, passed away Monday, February 27, 2012. He was born to Sidney G. and Clara (Bond) Mason on September 13, 1920 in Bismarck, ND. Bob grew up and lived in Fargo through high school. His parents taught their children to be civic conscious minded. In 8th grade, Bob won a Citizenship Award. He sold magazine subscriptions to make money to buy a bike, and sold the most in one year to win a trip to Alaska. Bob loved playing the piano, and took lessons starting in first grade continuing through high school. He remained an avid piano player for the rest of his life. Bob lettered in both basketball and football in high school. He belonged to the DeMolay young men’s group sponsored by the Masonic Lodge. Bob was an Eagle Scout, and joined the HiY Club for boys at the YMCA. He was then was a counselor at the YMCA Summer Camp, where he received his Junior Life Saving Badge. Bob was an avid hunter, hunting with his family for pheasant, grouse, and prairie chicken. Bob was a member in the National Honor Society, earning academic scholarships to Northwestern University. While in college, Bob was a member of the Delta Pau Delta fraternity. He followed sports at Northwestern for the rest of his life. Bob was an Air Force Lieutenant Colonel. He served for over 20 years. Bob then spent his whole career with Equitable Life Insurance, working in multiple locations before returning to Fargo. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, of 35 years, and his wife, Evelyn, of 20 years. Bob is survived his children, Michael and Tina; his grandchildren, Jamie, Sara and Justin, his great grandchildren, Madison and Rylee; and by his sister, Jean (Bill) Guy. Funeral: Thursday, March 1, 2012, at 3:00 PM, at First Congregational Church ~ 406 8th St. S., Moorhead. Visitation: Wednesday, February 29, 2012, from 5-7 PM, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo. Burial: Buffalo Cemetery, Buffalo, ND (in the spring)
