Arthur Hoium

Rev. Arthur LeRoy Hoium of Fargo, ND, died at Eventide Lutheran Homes in Moorhead, MN, at the age of 81. Arthur was born on February 5, 1930, in Hayfield, MN, the son of Roy and Clara (Odegard) Hoium. Arthur was baptized on March 16, 1930, by the Rev. B.A. Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hayfield, MN. He was confirmed on June 17, 1945 at First Lutheran Church, Blooming Prairie, MN, by the Rev. H.J. Rasmussen. Arthur attended country school at District 85 Jt, Mower County, MN. He graduated from Blooming Prairie High School, Blooming Prairie, MN, in 1949. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy in June 1951, served on two different ships, and served in the Korean War until 1955. In the fall of 1955 he entered Luther College, Decorah, Iowa where he graduated in 1959 with B.A. degree. Then he entered Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, MN in the fall of 1959 and received his Bachelor of Divinity Degree in May of 1963. He later received his Master’s degree and doctorate of Divinity. On July 20, 1963 he was united in marriage with Esther Schoenecker at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND. Art and Esther are the parents of three children: Paul, Joanna and David. Arthur was ordained into the Lutheran ministry of the American Lutheran Church on June 9, 1963 at First Lutheran Church, Blooming Prairie, MN, by the Rev. Robert Boyd, professor at Luther Seminary. From 1963 to 1999 he served the following Parishes: Dovre and North Dovre Lutheran Parish, Osnabrock, ND, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Tower City, ND, Buffalo Lutheran Church, Buffalo, ND, Trinity Lutheran Church, Revillo, South Dakota, Zoar Lutheran Church, Marietta, MN, Unity Lutheran and Salem Lutheran Parish, rural Freeman, SD, First Lutheran Church, Bottineau, ND and Faith Lutheran Church, Delavan, MN. He retired in 1999 at the Southeastern Minnesota Synod Assembly, Rochester, MN. His wife Esther and Arthur moved to Fargo, ND in retirement. They transferred their membership to First Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND. Since 1999 he has served the following parishes as Interim Pastor: Olivet Lutheran Church, Fargo, East Walle, Walle, and Evanger Lutheran Parish rural Grand Forks, ND, Maple Sheyenne Parish, Harwood, ND, Golden Ridge Lutheran, Fargo, ND, Congregational Lutheran Parish, Gardner, ND, Bergen Lutheran Parish, Lidgerwood, ND and Calvary Lutheran Parish, Hankinson, ND. In 1966 Arthur attended the Bethel Bible Series in Madison, Wisconsin. Arthur Hoium leaves his wife, Esther; daughter, Joanna (Steven) Schwindt, three children: Luke, Jada and Jillian, Moorhead, MN; son, Paul Hoium and children Hailea, Skye, Hayden, Spencer and Arieanna, Coon Rapids, MN; son David (Aletta) and daughter, Willow Ann, Moorhead, MN; two brothers, Donald (Merilyn) Hoium, Rochester, MN and Sterling (Beverly) Hoium, Austin, MN and sister, Ann Marie Hoium, Cambridge, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents. Art served faithfully and well. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his servants.” Memorial Service: Sunday, December 18, 2011, 2:00 PM at Eventide Lutheran Chapel, Moorhead, MN, with visitation one hour prior to services. Funeral Service: Monday, December 19, 2011, 10:00 AM at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND, with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.
