Lloyd Anthony Heroff

May 23, 1943 — January 3, 2015

Pastor Lloyd Anthony Heroff died on January 3rd, 2015 in Pelican Rapids, MN. Born in St Paul, MN to Lloyd A Heroff, Sr. and Sylvia E. Heroff (nee Maki), he grew up in St. Paul’s West 7th Street neighborhood. As an only child, he spent a significant amount of time enjoying the company of his cousins at his aunt and uncles homes located in of Bohemian (Czech) and Finnish settlements. After graduating from Monroe High School in 1961, he attended Wartburg and Macalester Colleges, graduating in 1965. While majoring in English Literature at Macalester, he met Doris Jean “in the 17th Century” as he liked to joke. Doris introduced him to his love of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and to fine cuisine. Eventually, he transitioned from mere connoisseur to excellent chef.

Despite his acceptance to graduate school at the University of MN, he was drafted on Christmas Eve in 1965 and subsequently enlisted in the Navy. He married Doris Jean Ann Pyle after completing French linguist training in Washington DC. Lloyd served aboard the USS Oxford off the coast of Vietnam and then in Rota, Spain, where he and Doris learned to love Spanish food and culture. Here is a link to he and Doris making his favorite dessert, caramel flan: http://prev.dailyherald.com/lifestyle/food/cookoftheweek/?id=367025 .

After being discharged from the Navy, Lloyd returned to the Chicago area with Doris to work as an Adolescent Counselor at Forest Hospital. Later, he decided to try his hand at teaching and returned to Macalester to obtain certification, eventually working as an English teacher and coach of the Brooklyn Park Junior High School Gymnastic team.

In 1972, he claimed, “My car drove me to Luther Seminary," where he earned his Master of Divinity degree (1976). Later he attained a Master of Liberal Arts (1989) from Moorhead State University.
When not caring for his parishioners or leading a Boundary Waters expedition, Lloyd could often be found sailing or windsurfing on Lake Lizzie. Pastor Heroff is survived by his wife Doris, their son John, and his recently adopted stray cat Black Silver; his extended family of Heroffs and Dandls; and his many dear friends.

He served parishes as solo, youth, interim, and Senior Pastor in these Midwestern churches:
Calvary and St. Pauli, St. Hilaire Parish, MN
Faith, West Fargo, ND
Gustaf Adolf, Gwinner, ND
Trinity, Princeton, MN
Resurrection, Chicago, IL

Let Evening Come
BY JANE KENYON
Let the light of late afternoon
shine through chinks in the barn, moving
up the bales as the sun moves down.

Let the cricket take up chafing
as a woman takes up her needles
and her yarn. Let evening come.

Let dew collect on the hoe abandoned
in long grass. Let the stars appear
and the moon disclose her silver horn.

Let the fox go back to its sandy den.
Let the wind die down. Let the shed
go black inside. Let evening come.

To the bottle in the ditch, to the scoop
in the oats, to air in the lung
let evening come.

Let it come, as it will, and don’t
be afraid. God does not leave us
comfortless, so let evening come.

WILD GEESE
Mary Oliver
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
