O.Q. Johnson, 81, of Fargo, ND, died Thursday, February 2, 2012, at Sanford Health, Fargo. O.Q. “Sonny” Johnson was born October 23, 1930, in Enid, Oklahoma, to parents O.Q. Johnson, Sr., and Willie (Howard) Johnson. He grew up in West Liberty, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1949. He attended the University of Iowa before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served aboard the U.S. Yosemite, AD-19. After his discharge from the U.S. Navy, he returned to the University of Iowa and received his Bachelor of Science degree in marketing. He married his wife, Marjorie Buckman, in West Liberty, Iowa, on August 10, 1952. They lived in Sioux City, Iowa, where he worked for Texaco Oil Company. He was transferred to Fargo in 1970, retiring in 1981. O.Q. was an active member of the South West Optimist Club in Fargo and a past District Governor of Optimist International. He enjoyed fishing, NDSU Bison football and basketball, and UND hockey, but his greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Fargo; sons, Max (Kathy) Johnson and Phil Johnson, both of Fargo; brother, Roy (Joyce) Johnson of Laurel, MT; six grandchildren; and his favorite buddy, his dog King and many, many friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at 1:00PM at First United Methodist church in Fargo. Visitation will take place on Friday, February 10, 2012, from 5-7PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home in Fargo.
