Norman A. Nubson

July 3, 1928 — February 13, 2013

Norman Arvid Nubson, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 12:03 a.m. in Devonshire, the Memory Care Unit of Touchmark at Harwood Groves in Fargo, ND.

Norman was born on July 3, 1928 to Nels and Mildred Nubson on a farm near Glenfield, ND, destined to have lifelong North Dakota ties. After moving with his family to Carrington, Norman worked jobs like pumping gas and fixing car tires, at times running the store without adult supervision. Dances on Saturday night were very special. High school graduation in 1947 represented passage into adulthood. From these early experiences, a lifetime commitment to integrity and service was formed.

Norman always seemed to have a smile and a good word for anyone that happened to be around. In any social gathering, he seemed to either be visiting with an old friend or making a new one. An easy manner and personal integrity made this a natural, everyday occurrence for Norman.

After completing study in accounting at Fargo Business College, Norman built a career in financial services at Merchants National Bank in Fargo, Kindred State Bank, and then 35 years at Northwestern Federal Savings and Loan in Fargo. While at Northwestern Federal Savings and Loan, Norman served as Loan Officer, Real Estate Appraiser, and Vice President. He was the first Savings and Loan on-staff appraiser in North Dakota to be granted membership to the Society of Real Estate Appraisers.

There were 2 brief breaks from his financial services employment. First, having enlisted in the North Dakota Air National Guard, Staff Sergeant Nubson was activated for service to his country from March 1950 through November 1952. When the 1957 tornado hit Fargo, Norman had just started as Office Manager and Salesman for Charbonneau Construction Company, in service to help rebuild the Fargo community during the next 2 years.

It was at Merchants National Bank that Norman met his future wife, LaVerne Joan Ranger, whom he married on December 19, 1953. A legacy of 4 generations have come from this marriage. Norman is survived by wife LaVerne and sister Marjorie (Victor) Ziegler. Children include sons Jay (Cheryl Bannes) Nubson, Lewistown, MT; Randy (Nancy) Nubson; Pelican Rapids, MN; Ross (Kendra) Nubson, West Fargo and daughter Jill (Douglas) Anderson, Antigo, WI. The up-and-coming generations include Kyle, Colter, Avery, Autumn, Zachary, Cole, Alysse, Rachel, Adam, Leah, Adam, Jacob, Lisa, Joseph, Jessica, and Alyssa; some of whom are raising children of their own.

The family expresses special thanks to Hospice of the Red River Valley, especially Gayle and Tracey; and the devoted, caring staff of Devonshire, Touchmark where Norman resided 4 years.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of the RRV, St. Paul’s Free Lutheran Church, or The Waterford Heritage Garden at Touchmark.
