Norma was born in Bismarck, ND to Theresa and Ole Ellingson. She grew up playing piano for school and church. After high school, she studied organ at the MacPhail school in Minneapolis, MN and attended Lutheran Bible Institute. Norma completed her nursing degree and settled in Fargo to work at St. Luke’s Hospital. She met Curtis Halverson in the choir at First Lutheran church and they married in 1958. They had two sons, Alan and Paul. She was full time organist at First United Methodist Church for 36 years, playing piano and organ for numerous church services, weddings, funerals, recitals and other musical events, including Notables and Fargo-Moorhead Music Club. She taught piano and organ in the community for forty years and continued to sing with the First Lutheran Church choir with Curtis.
After retiring, she and Curtis had a winter home in Mesa, Arizona where they played in the Mesa Community Band. They both played for many years in the Lake Agassiz Band in Fargo. They also enjoyed their cabin near Detroit Lakes, MN where Norma played the organ for Shoreham Chapel. Music was her greatest joy and passion along with her faith and her family.
Norma is preceded in death by husband Curtis, her parents and older sister Evelyn Ytreide. She leaves behind sons Alan and Paul (Katy), grandchildren Jay and Casey, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Funeral service will be Tuesday November 28, 11:00 am at First Lutheran Church Fargo, ND with visitation at 10:00 am.
