Naomi J. Fischer, 73, of Moorhead, MN, died on Tuesday, October 23, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer in the Palliative Care Unit at MeritCare in Fargo, ND, surrounded by her family. Naomi Janice Windahl was born January 7, 1934, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, daughter of William and Agnes (Skovholt) Windahl. The family moved to Fergus Falls, Minnesota, in 1935. She attended the public grade schools in Fergus Falls and graduated from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls in 1952. Naomi attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She met Allan Fischer in Speculator, NY, where they both worked at the Camp-of-the-Woods in 1953. The couple still maintains their summer residence there, where the family continues to gather each year. Naomi and Allan were married on September 1, 1956, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and lived in New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Minnesota and North Dakota, before returning to their present home in rural Moorhead. Naomi and Allan were short-term missionaries with the Covenant Church, serving in Zaire. Naomi’s art ability was used extensively during their mission work. Naomi was a founding member of the Red River Valley Watercolor Society serving on the nominating and hostess committees. She donated many pictures to charitable organizations and regularly exhibited her art work at local arts shows and in Speculator, NY. Music was also a big part of her life. She organized, directed and sang with a woman’s sextet at Knollbrook Covenant Church. Her faith in Jesus Christ was evident as she lived her life. She was a devoted prayer warrior for her husband, children and grandchildren. Bible Study Fellowship was an important part of her life as she completed their series of studies. Naomi is survived by her husband, Allan, Moorhead, MN; a son Jeff (Diana) Fischer, Forest Lake, MN; a daughter, Linda (Sam) Germann, Champlin, MN; a sister, Joyce (Philip) Aune, Underwood, MN; and four grandchildren, Quinn, Jenna, Mariah and Erika. She was preceded in death by her parents. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit of MeritCare. They are a special group of professionals who tenderly cared for Naomi. Memorials may be directed to Camp-of-the-Woods, Gospel Volunteers of the World; Naomi and Allan Fischer Scholarship at NDSU or the Agnes and William Windahl Scholarship at Hillcrest Lutheran Brethren Schools in Fergus Falls.
