Monroe S. Shoemaker, 73, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Fargo, ND. Monty was born November 17, 1935, to James and Martha (Booth) Shoemaker in Furnace, Kentucky. He moved to Washington, DC where he graduated from Franklin Roosevelt High School and later attended Southeastern University. He graduated from Tokyo University in Tokyo, Japan in 1956 with a degree in Japanese. In 1948, he interned for House Speaker, Sam Rayburn. Monty was active in Democratic politics and worked on Governor Bill Richardson’s presidential campaign. Monty joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and continued with the U.S. Air Force Reserves for 15 years. He served as a Tech E-6 as part of military security police in both Korea and Vietnam. Monty worked as a member of the U.S. Capitol police. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marylin Doss.
