Milton B. Baarstad

September 4, 1921 — February 28, 2015

Milton Bjarne Baarstad died February 28, 2015 in Grand Forks, ND. He was born September 4, 1921 on a farm near Nome, ND, the son of G.O. and Clara (Harland) Baarstad. He attended school in Eastedge, ND, and graduated from Nome High School, where he excelled at football, basketball, and academics.

Due to financially difficult times, Milton was unable to use his partial scholarship to Concordia College and remained on the family farm helping his folks and neighbors with their farming. He went to work for the Woodworth Elevator Co. at their Coburn Elevator near Leonard, ND, where he later managed the elevator for 2 years. In the summer of 1948, he moved to Fargo to work for Fargo Implement Co. (John Deere). He spent 31 years with Deer and Company serving as a salesman, as parts manager, and as their service manager.
Milton married Eloise Kellerman on Dec. 25, 1948 in Enderlin, ND, beginning a marriage journey of 66+ years.

Milt had a quick wit paired with a good gift of gab that made him a favorite with his relatives, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and the farmers he served. Milt loved dancing, playing cards, Lawrence Welk, and telling a “good” joke. Milt loved kids, always making time to talk with them and/or play games with them. Milt was also known on occasion, to tease a little. Those on the receiving end of that teasing knew he liked them. Milt loved sports, including golf, which he took up after retirement. Retirement provided time for winter stays in Nevada and for focusing on his lawn and garden. As for the role of Grandpa, it was a natural fit for Milt. Brant and Kalli brought a lot of smiles to his face and pride to his heart. He thought the world of them.

Milton is survived by his wife, Eloise; son, Bruce and his wife Kimberlea; two grandchildren, Branton, and Kallin; and one sister, Esther Jonasson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth; and four brothers, Gaylon, Lawrence, Erling and Edmund.
