M. Mildred Hong of Hallock, MN, formerly of Fargo, ND, passed away in MeritCare’s Palliative Care Center, Fargo, ND on Friday, November 6, 2009, after a brief illness. Mildred was born on June 27, 1919, in Yankton, SD, to Carl E Miller and Minnie (Johnson) Miller. Following high school graduation, Mildred attended Business College in Mitchell, SD. It was there she met the love of her life, and best friend, Percy Hong. They married in 1940. Percy’s employment with Dakota Sash & Door Co brought the young couple to Fargo where they made their home for many years. Percy was the manager and then owner of Dakota Sash & Door and he and Mildred were loving parents to their children, Janet, Cindy, Barbara, and Jon. Mildred occasionally worked outside the home as a secretary for the Herbst Department Store and also for Arrowhead Music Camp located near Barnum MN. She and Percy were charter members of Edgewood United Methodist in Fargo and were actively involved with their church’s organizations, including the choir which Mildred at one time directed. Mildred enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening, fishing, playing various card and board games with her children, and being a part of her grand and great-grandchildren’s lives. Mildred was known for her wonderful baked beans and they were a hit at many social gatherings. Some of the best times were spent at the family cabin on Lake Eunice where Mildred and Percy’s children, grandchildren, and friends learned to swim, fish, row and drive the boat, maneuver the sailboat, ski or simply relax. The memories are precious. Percy and Mildred instilled in their children the love for God, family, friends, and nature. After Percy’s death in 1995, Mildred continued to enjoy the family home in Fargo. In 2008, she moved to The Tamarac, an assisted living facility in Stephen, MN. In July, 2009, she moved to the Kittson Memorial Nursing Home in Hallock, MN. Mildred is survived by her daughters, Cindy Clow (Allen) of Lancaster, MN; Barbara Richardson (Mont) of Woodland Hills, CA; son, Jon of Big Spring, TX; son-in-law, Dale McCright; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Percy; twin daughters, Jane Ann and Joan Ann; daughter, Janet Hong McCright; daughter-in-law, Brenda Hong; and brother, Carl E Miller Jr. Mildred’s sense of humor continued to delight family and friends right up until the end. Her strong belief in God and her gentle spirit will be missed by many. Memorials are preferred to MeritCare Palliative Center, Fargo, ND. Memorial Service: Sunday, November 8, 2009, at 3:00 PM, at Edgewood United Methodist Church, Fargo.
