Mercedes Peterson died peacefully at Bethany on University on November 29, 2014. She was born in Hillsboro, North Dakota on September 16, 1916 to Jerome and Amelia (Knudson) Baglien. Always adventurous, she applied for a job as a secretary with the War Department, moving to Washington D.C during World War II. Before returning to North Dakota in 1959, she lived in Denver and Des Moines. She worked for Clay County Soil Conservation Service for over twenty years.
Most of her life she was an independent, single mother. She raised her two sons to value learning, to love reading, to be responsible, and to never ever be late. She avidly attended the various activities of her children and grandchildren and was always eager to learn about their latest achievements and to cheer them on.
She was a crossword puzzle fan and a good cook, whose specialties included Swedish meatballs, cookies and lefse. She joined the congregation at Hope Lutheran shortly after its founding and later folded church bulletins every Friday with a group of fellow retirees for many years until her arthritis interfered.
She is survived by her two sons, Larry (Mary Struck) and Jim (Manning), her grandsons Geoffrey (Allyson), Erik (Elizabeth Wood), and Franklin, her great-grandsons, Spencer and Collin, and her dear nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband Maurice, her daughter-in-law Gail, and her siblings Marion Koering, Jean Stenerson, Phyllis, and Jerome.
The family is grateful to the kind and supportive staff of Cedar Square West at Bethany on University for their caring attitude and high quality support. Donations to the Fargo Public Library or to your own public library would be in keeping with her spirit.
**A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 16, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home in Fargo.**
