Mary Martin was born January 13, 1960 to Roger and Pauline Martin in Devils Lake. She graduated from Napoleon High School in 1978. She then attended North Dakota State University where she earned two degrees - Home Economics (1982) and Child Development Family Relations (1983). After graduation, she started her lifelong career in teaching and daycare. She married Terry Westra on June 22, 1985. The next seven years they moved around the country as Terry served his country as a U.S. Air Force officer. They lived in California, South Carolina, and Idaho, and Mary continued working as a daycare provider. In 1992, when Terry left the Air Force, they moved to Minnesota, and Mary started working at New Horizons Academy, where she worked for the next 23 years.

She loved teaching young children and they loved having her as their "Miss Mary". Her passion for learning was evident every day she was there.

Mary also was a fantastic seamstress. She began sewing clothes while in high school and then branched out to smocking. Having a "Made by Mary Westra" label in your clothing is a prized possession for many, many people.

She was a wonderful mother to Nicholas, Rachel, and Steven and loved them with all her heart. She treasured her time with them.

Mary passed away on Friday, October 25, 2024 at Suite Living in Brooklyn Park, MN after a decade long battle with dementia. She was 64 years old.

Mary is survived by her husband, Terry Westra; sons, Nicholas and Steven; daughter, Rachel (Matt) Ramsett; her two grandsons, EJ and Wesley Ramsett; father, Roger Martin; and sister, Gerry Reed.
