Mary J. Hottman, 85, of Barnesville, MN, formerly of Fargo, ND, died Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Clayco Care Center in Barnesville.
Mary Jane Hofforth was born January 16, 1930 on a family farm near Knox, ND to Joseph and Lucy (Feit) Hofforth. She grew up in both Rugby and Minot, ND, later moving to Aberdeen, SD, which is where she met her husband, Jacob Hottman. They were married August 28, 1948, and in the beginning moved frequently for Jacob’s work with Red Owl Grocery, until settling in Fargo, ND in 1954.
After raising their five daughters in Fargo, Mary began work doing housekeeping at the Fargo Clinic, where she worked until her retirement 20 years later. During retirement she enjoyed taking care of her houseplants, doing a bit of gardening, but most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After Jacob died in 2002, she would enjoy taking day trips with her daughters, doing anything from dinner, shopping, or site seeing. Mary will always be remembered as having a smile on her face, and was always kind toward everyone.
Mary is survived by four daughters, Janice Hottman Mikkelson, Barnesville, MN; Sharon (Craig) Herfindahl, Barnesville, MN; Julie Thompson, West Fargo, ND; JoAnn Hoffarth, Hawley, MN; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob; infant daughter, Brenda Susan; daughter, Barbara Ann; five brothers; two sisters; and granddaughter, Shannon Marie.
