Marle Herman Thorstad, 81 of Fargo ND died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday May 27, 2017 after a long battle with cancer.
He’ll be remembered as an inquisitive thinker, a lifelong learner and teacher. He continued to impart this wisdom through his contagious spirit for life.
Marle was born to Martin Thorstad and Hatie (Wendt) in Hope ND on Sept 3, 1935. He attended school in Hope and graduated from Page H.S. in 1953. He received a B.S. in Science Education from Jamestown College in 1957 and a M.S in Science Education from NDSU. Marle married Mary Elizabeth Davis of Page ND on Sept. 3, 1954. They raised 3 daughters in Fargo ND and shared many interests during their 50 years of marriage.
Marle had a lengthy career in education and administration. This included time at Fargo Central, Fargo South, Oaks ND, Bisbee ND, Clifford/Galesburg ND and McAllen, TX.
Marle was an accomplished athlete and participated in football, basketball, track, and baseball while attending college. After college, he continued his love of sports and coached football and track while teaching biology in Fargo. He was greatly admired and respected. Throughout his life he remained connected to former students, athletes and colleagues.
Marle’s zest for life found expression in many interests and passions; foremost his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Love for his family is followed closely by his enduring friendships, support of the NDSU Bison, rock hunting with his daughter Amy, and ALL sports at ALL levels. He enjoyed his church, history, movies, music, novels, new cars/houses/clothes, politics, the Fargo Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, and meeting friends and family at his favorite restaurants in Fargo.
Marle is survived by his daughters, Angie (Michael) Saladino, Amy (John) Satrom, Becky (Roger) Gilbertson; three granddaughters, Stephanie Saladino, Sarah Saladino, Sophia Satrom; four grandsons, Jared (Katie) Satrom, Austin (Jessica) Satrom, Cole Satrom and Marc Saladino; three great granddaughters, Oliva Satrom, Nora Satrom, Hannah Satrom; two siblings, Don (Cindy Nellermoe) Thorstad, and Helen Janis.
His funeral service will be Tuesday, May 30 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church, 906 1st Ave South, Fargo, ND, with visitation one hour prior to services at the church.
