Marjorie Louise Opperman was born July 28, 1927, to William and Mildred Sebens in Milnor, ND. She was the next to youngest of seven children. Marge died peacefully with family members at her home in Touchmark, Fargo, on April 11, 2021, age 93.
The Sebens family moved to Fargo in 1939, and Marge graduated from Fargo (Central) High in 1944. It was there that she met her husband of 70 years, Warren Opperman. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree from North Dakota Agricultural College (NDSU), Marge married and started her family. The next 30 years were spent raising four boys in their home on the north side of Fargo. Marge enjoyed relaxing on Pelican Lake in the summers. Fishing, swimming, and an occasional spin around the lake on water skis were some of her favorite activities. The last time on water skis marked her 70th birthday. She also enjoyed ice skating on the lake. When her boys moved to different parts of the country, she became a world traveler visiting family, friends, and former foreign exchange students.
Over the years Marge especially loved family gatherings at her summer home on Pelican Lake. She loved playing all kinds of games with grandkids—tennis, ping-pong, scrabble, and card games galore. Visitors to the lake were treated to Marge’s homemade pickles and strawberry jam. When family was not there, she was busy with many activities. There was always a bridge game on Marge’s schedule. An avid reader, Marge enjoyed the challenge of a daily crossword puzzle. Her laughter, energy and enthusiasm for life will be missed.
Marge found purpose in her long-term commitments. These include 75 years as a Gamma Phi Beta sorority member and, with her husband, 60 plus years active in Faith United Methodist church and with the El Zagal Shrine. She is survived by her husband; her four sons and spouses, Paul (Suzanne), David (Andrea), Gary (Kay), and Jay (Tiffany); seven grandchildren, Luke, Philip, Caitlin, Patrick, Elizabeth, Daniel, and Katherine; and one great granddaughter, Isabel. She is preceded in death by her parents and her six siblings, Lucille, Carl, Elsie, Dorothy, Raymond, and Norman.
Marge’s memorial service will be held Monday, July 12, at 11:00 am at Faith United Methodist Church in Fargo. The family is grateful for the loving care she received while residing at Touchmark. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, to Hospice of the Red River Valley, to Shriners Hospitals for Children, or to Gamma Phi Beta.
