Marjorie N. Hoag, 98, of Moorhead, Minn., died on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018 at Eventide on Eighth in Moorhead under the care of Eventide staff and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Marjorie Jean North was born to Paul Gordon North and Helen (Marcott) North on October 3, 1920 in El Paso, Illinois. She grew up on the family farm, graduated from El Paso Township High School in 1938 and from the University of Illinois in 1942. After graduation she served as the Girl Reserve Secretary for the YWCA in Freeport, Illinois. She met a staff member of the Freeport YMCA, Edward J. Hoag, and they were married on July 17, 1943 while he was a Corporal in the Army Air Corps.
Marjorie and Edward lived in Peoria, Ill., Chicago, Ill., Philo, Ill., and after Edward graduated from Seminary, in Minneapolis, Minn., Jamestown, N.D., and Scottsbluff, Neb. After retirement they lived on a lake near Battle Lake, Minn. and at Touchmark at Harwood Groves in Fargo, N.D.
Wherever they lived, Marjorie was active in many non-profit organizations. Some of her roles included: a member of the American Association of University Women, Sunday School teacher, Cub Scout leader, president of the North Dakota Mental Health Association, member of the Board of Directors of the National Mental Health Association, Executive Board member of the Panhandle Mental Health Center, an ordained Presbyterian elder, several leadership roles in Presbyterian judicatories, and a member of PEO. She began piano lessons at the age of eight and played for over 80 years in worship services and entertaining residents of Touchmark.
Marjorie is survived by her son, Martin (Linda) of Fargo, N.D. and their children, Andrew (Mari Shten) of New York, N. Y. and Eric (Melissa) of St. Louis Park, Minn.; daughter, Susan (Greg) Waite of Absarokee, Mont. and their children, Katie (Jason) Rader of Lincoln, Neb. and Peggy (Shawn) Waite Bradley of Kansas City, Mo.; and daughter Deborah (Douglas) Landers of Fargo, N.D. and their children Jack (Lexi) of Evergreen, Col. and Libby (Caleb) Luecke of St. Paul, Minn. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Patricia Warth of Wauwatosa, Wisc. and Marilyn North of El Paso, Ill., seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, the Rev. Edward J. Hoag, brother George North and sister Paulita (Al) Janssen.
Memorials are preferred to the YWCA Cass Clay or First Presbyterian Church, Fargo.
