Marie Elizabeth Heggem

August 8, 1927 — April 1, 2024

Marie Elizabeth Heggem, 96, passed away on April 1, 2024, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Marie Elizabeth Trolsen was born August 8, 1927, in Mountainville, NY, to George and Rosabel (Gayton) Trolsen. She attended school in New York until her graduation from Harding High School in Bridgeport, CT, at the age of 16. After graduation, she enlisted in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps at Norwegian Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. She had the joy of wearing her uniform in 1945 for the last time on V-E Day at Times Square in New York City.

Marie received her RN Degree in 1948. During this time, she met the love of her life, Warren Heggem, who was a Chaplin Intern at the Norwegian Hospital where they were both working. Marie asked Warren to a Sadie Hawkins dance, which he happily accepted, and they were together ever since. Marie and Warren were married on September 4, 1948, in Brooklyn, NY, and were happily married for 65 years until Warren's passing on May 28, 2014. They lived in many places throughout Warren's ministry until finally settling in Fargo, ND.

While living in Fargo, Marie enjoyed her work as an RN and House Supervisor for Eventide Lutheran Home from 1980-1993. Marie was proud of her Norwegian heritage and loved to embroider various Hardanger pieces. She was also an avid reader. Her love for books inspired her to establish various libraries in the churches where Warren was ministering. Traveling in the RV was something they also enjoyed, and after retiring, they spent their winter months in Fredericksburg, TX.

Marie is survived by her children, Kristin (Terry) Kenny of Groton, SD and Daniel (Diane) Heggem of Henderson, NV; grandchildren, Jonathan (Sarah) Jespersen, Kris Heggem, and Korre Heggem; great-grandchildren, Hunter Jespersen and Christian Jastorff; and sister, Darlene (Wayne) Cotten.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Warren Heggem; and sisters, Vera Nora Cobey and Georgette Zekonis.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Groton, SD, at 10:00 AM on Monday, April 15, 2024. All are welcome.

A private memorial service will be held at the First Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Warren Heggem.
