Margie (Weast) Leier, age 91 of Fargo, ND departed from her loving family on September 18, 2020. Margie was born in Minneapolis, MN on June 3, 1929 to Arthur and Agnes (Nelson) Weast. She was married to the late George Leier and had six children.
Margie graduated from Minneapolis Vocational High School in 1947 and worked as a comptometer operator at Western Union until meeting George through a mutual friend and moving to Esmond, ND. They were married November 20, 1951 and farmed south of Esmond until George’s death in 1980. Margie moved to Esmond and worked as the bookkeeper at the Esmond Elevator until her retirement. She then lived in Devils Lake until moving to Bethany Grace Point Independent Living in Fargo in 2017.
Margie was an avid vegetable and flower gardener. She spent hours canning what she grew along with juneberry and chokecherry jellies and syrups (family favorites). Her pies were unparalleled and required desserts every Sunday and at family get togethers. Margie’s homes were also always surrounded by colorful flowerbeds. She enjoyed bowling in the Esmond bowling league and was an enthusiastic (and lucky) bingo player. After retiring Margie spent thousands of hours creating detailed counted cross-stitch pictures both large and small. She stitched and framed over 50 that hang in the homes of family and friends and in her church in Devils Lake.
Margie’s focus was always first and foremost on her children. She was determined that they would all reach their potential and achieve their career and personal goals. She did all she could to ensure they had all available resources and opportunities including becoming a World Book salesperson so her children could have encyclopedias, dictionaries and atlases at home. An answer of “I don’t know” was not okay – instead “Let’s look it up” was what was frequently heard at home. While Margie never had the opportunity to go college, she was proud that all of her children did.
Margie is survived by her six children: Laurie Ferraro (Rocky) of Clifton Park, NY; Terri Sprenger (Harley) of Fargo, ND; Donna Brady of Citrus Heights, CA; Debbie Chandler (Loran) of West Fargo, ND; Darren Leier (Brenda) of Thief River Falls, MN and Doug Leier (Christy) of Horace, ND. Margie is also survived by six grandchildren: Lindsay Ferraro, Christopher Ferraro, Erika Berg, Jacob Leier, Jennicca Leier and Rebecca Leier and five great-grandchildren: Ellyanna Bye, Axeton Berg, Avery Berg, Luca LaPosta and Leonardo LaPosta. She is preceded in death by her husband George and all of her siblings (3 sisters and one brother).
A memorial service will be held in Fargo early next summer with burial at the Esmond Cemetery.
