Margaret Kitson Barnard, 88, died September 5, 2012, in Rochester, MN.
Margaret Loretta Kitson was born July 8, 1924 to Dr. Walter Walwin Kitson and Irene Louise (Van Ness) Kitson. She grew up in Atlantic, Iowa, graduating from high school in 1942. She was active in the music department in high school. She attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, graduating in 1946. After a year of training at the Illinois Central Hospital in Chicago, she took a job as a laboratory technician at Grant Hospital in Chicago, from 1947 to 1950.
In 1947, she married Dr. Donald Max Barnard. After a year in Boston and two years in Germany, where Dr. Barnard served in the U.S. Occupation Forces, they settled in Fargo, North Dakota in 1953, where Dr. Barnard was a specialist in internal medicine at the Fargo Clinic and they raised their family. She worked as a secretary at the Fargo Chamber of Commerce from 1977 to 1982.
Margaret did volunteer work with the YWCA Seniors Program, Meals on Wheels and St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of PEO, Woman's Club of Fargo, Fine Arts Club and First United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, who passed away in February 2012. Margaret is survived by five children: Mark (Laura) Barnard of Whitefish Bay, WI; Scott (Ann) Botel-Barnard of Elkins Park, PA; Neal Barnard of Chevy Chase, MD; Diane (Ken) Pritchett of Rochester, MN; David (Karen Weium) Barnard of St. Paul, MN; nine grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and a brother, Raymond (Jeanne) Kitson, Janesville, WI.
The memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 9th at First United Methodist Church of Fargo. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Arrangements are with Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home in Fargo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the charity of your choice.
