Mamie “Kitty” (Mittag) Smith, age 91, Fargo, ND, died July 17, 2014 at Bethany on University.
Mamie Audrey Joyce was born October 18, 1922 in Milnor, ND to Walter and Elinor (Elofson) Joyce. As a young girl her family moved to New York for job opportunities. After three years they moved back to the Sand Hills near Lisbon, ND. She attended school in Lisbon.
Mamie married Monroe “Mitty” Mittag November 1, 1940 in Lisbon, ND. They made their home in Moorhead where they raised their five children. Monroe died October 9, 1986. She married Andrew Smith March 17, 1991 in Vining, MN and they made their home in Fargo, ND.
Mamie was a nursing assistant at Eventide for a few years and worked at Hornbachers in Moorhead. She did volunteer work for many worthwhile organizations including, the American Cancer Society, Arthritis Foundation, Moorhead Senior Center, Moorhead Parks and Recreation, Lutheran Social Services, Senior Nutrition Program, American Legion, Eventide E100 and Meritcare Auxiliary. She received many awards for her time and dedication. In 1989, she was named one of the Ten Most Admired Senior Citizens in the Red River Valley.
She enjoyed making crafts for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family and friends and continued even as she was losing her eyesight.
She will be sadly missed for her genuine caring, thoughtful, enthusiastic personality. Making other people happy brought much happiness to her. Many people have a story of how she touched their lives.
Mamie is survived by her husband, Andrew; four daughters, Judy (Allan) Ladwig, Canon City, CO; Janice (Paul) Linde, Wyoming, MN; Sharon Hilber Schanilec, Fargo, ND; Joyce (Robert) Knapp, Tucson, AZ; one son, Ronald (Sharon) Mittag, Pelican Rapids, MN; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Monroe; mother-in-law, Elsie Mittag-Ward; four brothers, Frances, Wallace, Willard and Morris; three sisters, Alice Etzwieler, Genevieve Joyce, and Eva Ballinger; granddaughter, Wendy Linde and grandson, Geoffrey Hilber; sisters-in-law, Irene King, and Lillian Salverson.
Our family would like to thank the hospital staff at Sanford, Bethany nursing home staff, clergy and Hospice, for her wonderful care.
