M. Dolores "Do" Gunkelman

April 19, 1925 — December 8, 2014

Marion Dolores (Do) Shanks Gunkelman died Monday, December 8, 2014, at Rosewood on Broadway surrounded by loving family following a stroke.

M. Dolores Shanks was born April 19, 1925, in Fargo, ND to Robert G. and Veda (Cavers) Shanks. She graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1943 and received a bachelor’s degree from North Dakota Agricultural College (now NDSU) in 1947.

Do married R. F. (Tod) Gunkelman August 23, 1947, in Fargo, and together they raised six children and welcomed seven exchange students into their home. After retirement the Gunkelmans enjoyed traveling and split their time between Sun City, AZ and Fargo. Tod died January 12, 2014.

Other than her husband and family, Do’s passion was education. She served on the local, state, and national levels of PTA for many years including as ND State President (1965 to 1968). Do was active on the board of the Children’s Village (now Village Family Services) for many years. She was also active in First United Methodist Church, Fargo; Chapter AT PEO; Kappa Kappa Gamma; NDSU Team Makers; NDSU Alumni Assn.; YMCA; YWCA; Eastern Star; New Life Center; Fine Arts Club and held offices in many of these organizations.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, W. Chester Dickson, and her husband of 66 years.

She is survived by her brother, Robert G. Shanks, Grapeview, WA; two sons, R. Frank (Patricia), Midlothian, VA; Jay, Pinole, CA; four daughters: Janet (John) Bartley; Carol (Todd) Anhorn; Sally (David) Harmon; all of Fargo; and Barb (David) Herzog, Detroit Lakes, MN/Key West, FL; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to First Presbyterian Church, Fargo or The Village Family Services, Fargo.

The family would like to thank the staff of Bethany on University and Rosewood on Broadway for their excellent care.

Services will be held at a later date when family can be gathered together.
