Leonard Lewis, 71, passed away on January 15, 2019 at Essentia Health after a courageous battle with health issues for the past two months.
Leonard was born on August 4, 1947 in Fargo to Cora and Rollo Lewis. He was number eight of nine children. He graduated from Fargo Central in 1965. Throughout high school and following graduation he worked for the family business, Lewis Sand and Gravel. After that business was sold, he worked several jobs including construction, at various missile sites in North Dakota, and many manufacturing companies in Fargo. In 1975 he began working as a welder for Steiger Tractors which eventually became Case New Holland. He retired from Case in 2013 after 38 years.
On July 3, 1965 he married Sandra Wise in Rosholt, South Dakota and together they had two children, Shannon and Shawn. The family as a whole was active in snowmobiling and riding motorcycle. Over the years, Leonard took several motorcycle trips with family and friends including attending Sturgis many times. He passed on the love of riding, as both his children own and ride. He was a retired member of the FM Crusaders Motorcycle Club and enjoyed riding his motorcycle until health issues prevented him from continuing.
Leonard took great pride in keeping his home, yard and vehicles clean and well groomed. He enjoyed working in his garage yet never had a tool out of place. He loved spending time with family, going out to eat, watching TV and movies -especially westerns. He would be there to help out when it was needed because it was the right thing to do. He listened to country music and was a good dancer which he often demonstrated at wedding dances. His greatest joy, however was his grandchildren. He was an active grandpa and great-grandpa who always had a treat in his pocket to share with the grandkids. He was involved in their lives, wanting to know what they were doing and attended as many of their school events as he could. He always had a joke to share with others and liked to visit with people wherever he went. He was a two time cancer survivor. As his health issues increased he never complained. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and loved him.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Sandy; son, Shannon (Mary) Lewis, Lake Park, MN; daughter, Shawn (Rick) Kreil, Fargo, ND; four grandchildren, Myla Lewis, Zeb Lewis, Tyler Kreil and Molly (Ryan) Greenwood; great-grandchildren, Dean Greenwood and baby Greenwood due in July; sister, Lois (Curt) Oberg, Harwood ND; brothers, George (Edna Mae), Donald and Ronald, all of Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Paully Rheault, Horace, ND; brothers-in-law, Roger Arzt, West Fargo, ND, Don Holthe, Moorhead, MN, Wayne (Barb) Wise, Wolverton, MN and Wade (Cheryl) Wise, Moorhead, MN, in addition to many nieces and nephews and their families.
