Lawrence “Larry” Fowler, 84, of Fargo, ND, formerly of Mankato, MN, died Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Sanford Health Palliative Care, Fargo.
Lawrence Hawley Fowler, Jr. was born April 30, 1929 in Oak Park, Illinois to Lawrence and Eloise (Taylor) Fowler. He graduated from high school in 1946 at Elmhurst, Illinois, and graduated from college in 1950 at Grinell, Iowa. His family moved from Elmhurst to Mankato, MN in the summer of 1946. Larry served in the US Army in Japan during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953.
Larry married Betsy Schmitt on March 21, 1953. They lived in Sioux City, Iowa from March to December of 1953 where he worked for Sears Roebuck. He then worked for a short time as the credit manager for Sears in Bismarck, ND. In the summer of 1954, they moved to Rice Lake, WI, where Larry opened his own accounting practice. They moved to Mankato, MN in 1960, where along with his accounting practice he went into the Kentucky Fried Chicken business, eventually owning 12 locations in MN, SD, and Iowa.
In Mankato, Larry was on the boards of Red Cross and the YMCA. He was active in many sports including handball, tennis, downhill skiing, windsurfing, water skiing. He also had his private and instrument flying licenses. He will always be remembered for his quick-wit, and mastery of the one-liner.
Larry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betsy; two sons, Lee (Colleen) Fowler; Jeff (Sue) Fowler, both of Fargo, ND; six grandchildren, Jessie (Huso) Sejtanic; Kera (Kenny) Swiger; Jake, Matt, Ben, and Jared Fowler; and two great-grandchildren, Evan Gronvold and Zemina Sejtanic.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eloise and Lawrence.
Memorial Service: 2:00pm, Saturday, November 17, 2013 at Touchmark at Harwood Groves, Fargo, ND.
Interment: Gethsemane Cathedral Columbarium, Fargo.
