Kenneth Wollschlaeger, a beloved father, grandfather, partner, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on May 18, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 73 years old.
Born on October 10, 1950, in Bismarck, ND and raised in Dawson, ND, Ken's early life was shaped by the rolling plains and close-knit community of his hometown. He carried a lifelong fondness for Dawson, often returning to visit and reconnect with his roots.
After graduating from Steele High School in 1969, Ken enlisted in the Army, serving his country during the Vietnam War with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Blackhorse). He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal for his service. Ken's final duty assignment was with the 1st Transportation Company in Nuremberg, Germany, before being honorably discharged in 1972.
Ken's journey then led him to Fargo, where he built a fulfilling life and career. He worked for Agassiz Nursery and later spent 27 dedicated years as a manager for Fargo Mills. His final working years were spent at Anheuser Busch in West Fargo and Amenia, where he was known for his strong work ethic.
Ken found joy in the outdoors, spending countless hours hunting, fishing, gardening, and immersing himself in nature. He had a deep love for animals (and projects) which he channeled into building solariums and houses for his dogs and feral cat companions in Dawson.
Ken's true passion was his family. He was a devoted father to his children, Casey and Brett, and a doting grandfather. He shared a loving partnership of over 30 years with Carolyn Shook, becoming a cherished father figure to her children, grandchildren, and their families.
A selfless and generous spirit, Ken was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. His unwavering support and genuine care made him a cherished friend and mentor to many. He had a knack for woodworking, furniture restoration, sewing, viniculture, and for making wine, cider, and jelly, often sharing his creations with loved ones.
Ken is survived by his loving partner, Carolyn Shook; his children Casey (Jesse) Wollschlaeger and Brett (Jessica) Wollschlaeger; Carolyn's children Karen (Richie) Yonick and Parker (Katie) Shook; his grandchildren, Zoe, Aurora, Dakota, and Benny; his sister Jeanette (Jerry) Joiner; sister-in-law Linda (Gerry) Wollschlaeger; his step-father Bob Raab, his ex-wife Linda Nelson, cousins, nieces, nephews, his cat, Bella, and the honorary sons and daughters that he opened his heart (and cupboards) to.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frieda and Freddie Wollschlaeger, his brothers Gerry (Linda) Wollschlaeger and Robert (Diana) Wollschlaeger, his loyal hunting dogs Duke and Brandie and many family pets.
Ken's family would like to thank Tara Charboneau and the nurses and staff at the VA infusion center, Dr. Sommar Nurkic and the radiology team at the Roger Maris Cancer Center, the Sanford and VA Hospice Teams, and the friends, family, neighbors, and caregivers that supported Ken through his cancer treatment. Most of all, Ken's children would like to extend endless gratitude to his primary caregiver and love, Carolyn Shook, for being his rock, cheerleader, advocate, translator, chef, chauffeur, co-parent, confidante and companion.
