Kay Eileen Berg

March 12, 1944 — December 21, 2017

Kay Berg, 73, of Walcott ND went to her heavenly home on December 21, 2017 after a long courageous battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family and under care of Hospice.

Kay Kaatz was born on March 12, 1944 to Orville and Lucille (Olson) Kaatz in Enderlin, ND. Kay was raised on a farm near Anselm, ND. She attended country school for two years, then went on to graduate from Sheldon High School in 1962. Kay attended college at Valley City State, UND and earned her Licensed Practical Nursing Degree from NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND. She furthered her education at St. Luke’s School of Nursing and achieved RN status. On October 7th, 1967 she married Herbert Berg. They lived in West Fargo and rural Kindred before making Walcott their permanent home. At the pinnacle of her career, Kay worked for 47 years under the umbrella of Sanford beginning with St. Lukes and then Meritcare. During her career Kay specialized in Neuro Intensive Care before transitioning into the Ask A Nurse Program. She retired in 2012 due to health reasons. Kay was kind and compassionate, deeply impacting the lives of all people she cared for, both professionally and personally. She always put everyone’s needs above her own. Kay enjoyed visiting with everyone as well as organizing family and school reunions. She loved to save recipes and try them out at potlucks and family gatherings. Preserving history was another passion, she kept numerous albums of pertinent articles and photographs, lots and lots of photographs.

Her family was her pride and joy. She attended nearly all sporting events possible, first her children then her grandchildren, eventually becoming “grandma” to their friends. When she could no longer physically attend she watched the Cobber football games online or listened on the radio. Kay also had a special place in the heart of her daughter in law Nancy and her siblings who considered her “Mom”. Other past times included long country rides in the car or ATV and watching the curious activities of their pets, wildlife and birds. Kay was famously known for catching some rays of sun every spring (not being at all competitive of the end result).

Kay is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 50 years, Herbert Berg, son James (Nancy) Berg, daughter Jill (Rudy) Vara, grandchildren Joshua, Alex and Miah Berg, sister Janet Orn, brothers Gary and Dale Kaatz, aunt Bernice Painter, many cousins, nieces and nephews as well as dear close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Orville and Lucille Kaatz, brother in law Milo Berg, niece Teri Burgess and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Kay’s favorite charity.
