Kathy Lee Hertz

July 31, 1954 — November 30, 2013

Kathy Hertz, 59, of Bismarck, ND and recently of Fargo, died on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Sanford Health Palliative Care in Fargo, North Dakota after a 3 ½ year battle with ovarian cancer.

Kathleen Lee Shephard was born in Fargo on July 31, 1954, the daughter of Robert and Patricia (Brunelle) Shephard. She graduated from Bismarck High School in 1972 and Bismarck Junior College in 1974. In 2002, she was fortunate enough to marry her true love and soul mate, Don Hertz.

Kathy worked at Job Service North Dakota from 1975 until her retirement in 2009. The last 25 years of her employment at Job Service were in the Human Resource Department, which she loved. However, her most rewarding job was the honor (and challenge!) of being caregiver to Don, who suffers from Parkinson's Disease and other health issues for many years.

Kathy is survived by her beloved husband, Don; daughters, Leah (Gus) Staahl, West Fargo, ND; and Suzanne (Henry) Brucker, Aitkin, MN; sons, Donald (Esta) Hertz, Fountain Hills, AZ; and Dustin (Jodi) Hertz, Franklin, TN; grandchildren, Griffin and Ian Staahl, Joe and Alexandra Brucker, Tori and Jesse Helbling, and Jonah, Joshua and Joseph Hertz; parents, Patricia and Tom Barr, Fargo, ND; sisters, Barbara (Jim) Johnson and Leslie Miller, both of Fargo; Kelly (Doug) Muscha, Colfax, ND; and brother, Tom Barr, Omaha, NE. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a special aunt, Maxine, aka “Auntie Boo”.

Kathy was preceded in death by her grandparents, her baby sister, Pammy; and special uncle, Curt.

The family offers a special thanks to followers of Kathy's Caring Bridge site and to all the special friends who helped her and Don these last challenging years.

A private memorial service will be held at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, ND.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, PO Box 4777, New York, NY 10163-4777. In accordance with Kathy’s wishes, her corneas were donated to the MN Lions Eye Bank.
