John West

John D. West Sr., 82, of Fargo, ND, died Thursday, January 4, 2007, at his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. John Donald West Sr. was born October 17, 1924, at Brownton, Minnesota, son of Donald and Olga (Boehlert) West. He graduated from Fargo Central High School in May 1943. He served in the US Navy CB’s and in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, Marshall Islands and Tinian Island. After his discharge, John attended Interstate Business College. John married Eunice Anderson March 20, 1948, Minneapolis, Minnesota. John was a collector, outdoorsman, Sunday school superintendent and was involved in American Legion Baseball. He was known to the children at church as the “candy man.” John was active in the Sons of Norway and veterans service groups, especially Disabled American Vets, and he was the former Post Commander of the American Legion. He was also a former Director of the North Dakota Credit Union League. John worked as an examiner for the Bureau of Federal Credit Unions and was a loan service officer for the Small Business Administration. He retired in 1984. After retirement, he did private consulting for financial institutions. John is survived by his wife, Eunice; two sons, John Jr. (Julie) West, Moorhead, MN; David (Tina) West, Rothsay, MN; and a daughter, Barbara (Mike) Williams, Eden Prairie, MN; a brother, Larry (June) West, Park Rapids, MN; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Elaine Foss; brother, Max West; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Anderson. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials be sent to Hospice of the Red River Valley or the Good Samaritan Fund at Calvary United Methodist Church, 4575 45th St. S., Fargo, ND. Memorial Service: Sunday, January 7, 2007, at 2 PM, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Fargo, ND. Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, ND.
