John Smith, 86, of Fargo, ND, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, in Fargo. John Martin Smith was born March 16, 1922, in Felton, Minnesota, son of Paul and Dagmar (Christianson) Smith. He graduated from Glyndon High School. He served in the United States Army in WWII, in Europe with the 101st Airborne and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. John married Bernadine Hoeykens in 1950, in Glyndon, Minnesota. They lived in Fargo and Moorhead, raising their two children in the Fargo/Moorhead area. John was employed by Minnkota Manufacturing and then by Fargo Tank. At the time of his death, he was employed at the Fargo Forum newspaper. He married Carolyn Rommelsberg in 1979, in Glyndon, Minnesota. John was an avid gardener. He is survived by his son, Jim Smith, Loretto, MN; and his daughter, Janis (Joseph) Goryl, Iron Station, NC; a brother, Patrick Smith, Fargo, ND; and sister, Eveline Waswick, Fergus, Falls, MN; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Benjamin Goryl, Charlotte, NC; Stephanie Smith, Loretto, MN; Devin and Brennan Goryl, West Plains, MO.
