John Nygaard

John D. Nygaard, resident of Gilbert, AZ, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at The Lund Family Hospice Home in Gilbert, AZ, surrounded by his four children. John was born, August 01, 1935, in Stutsman County, ND to G.W. (Bill) and Rose Nygaard. He was raised with ten siblings in the Jamestown/Oakes area and later moved to Moorhead, MN where he graduated from Moorhead High School in 1953. John joined the U. S. Army, serving in the Korean War from May, 1954 to May, 1956. Completing his B.A., Business from Moorhead State University in 1961, he joined the U. S. Treasury Department as an Internal Revenue Agent where he served as a public agent for over 30 years. In addition to completing his Masters Degree, John's professional highlights include formula development for assessing farm co-ops; serving on the task force to revise and instruct the Cooperative Tax Law Courses. He later developed formulas relative to 501 (c)(12) organizations and finished his career in Houston, TX as an Exempt Organization Specialist. John was recognized for "great knowledge, writing ability, expertise and initiative." Upon retiring from the Internal Revenue Service in 1995, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. John's altruistic efforts were extended through various organizations such as local municipalities, non-profit organizations, homeless, and working poor. He is remembered for his intelligence, integrity, generosity, kindness, and wonderful sense of humor. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra (Kevin) Lien, Chandler, AZ, Cheryl Danielson, Fargo, ND, Janine (Stephen) Johnson, Moorhead, MN, and son, Jeffrey (Laura) Nygaard, Springfield, MO, eight grandchildren, Mathew Lien, Joni (Milos) Podmanik, Jennifer Danielson, Corey Danielson, Stephanie (Adam) Melquist, Stephen Johnson, Jr., Jimmy Johnson, and Jacquelyn Nygaard; special mention, Sarena (Justin) Reed; two great grandchildren, Hannah Lien and Adelyn Podmanik, sisters, Gladys Finch, Florence Wieber, and Hazel Campbell, as well as brothers, William Nygaard, Eugene (Aggie) Nygaard, and Charles (Kay) Nygaard. He is preceded in death by sisters, Ruth Summers and Geraldine (Larry) Lovelace; brothers, Gordon (Ingrid) Nygaard and George (Susan) Nygaard as well as his father, G.W. "Bill" and mother, Rose Nygaard. Funeral Service: Saturday, August 20, 2011, at 10:30 AM, at Hanson-Runsvold Chapel, Fargo, ND. Visitation: Friday, August 19, 2011, from 5-7 PM, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, ND. Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.
