John Guy Millar, 86 of Fargo ND passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26th at Rosewood on Broadway surrounded by his loving family.
John enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, playing cards and a good laugh with family and friends. John was always there to greet you with a warm hello and a smile and he never turned down a stroll across the dance floor. John (Poppi) loved his grandchildren unconditionally and will be deeply missed.
John and his twin brother James were born on August 14, 1928, two of seven children. The son of John Guy Millar Sr and Julia (Olson) Millar. John was born and grew up on the family farm and attended school in Shevlin and Bagley, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at Shevlin Clearwater Lutheran Church. As a young man John worked with his father on the family sawmill and later served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. On June 30th, 1956 he married Elaine C. Smith in Alida, MN. They lived in Fargo, ND, where they raised five children.
John worked in the highway construction business primarily as a Superintendent. During his 45 years in the construction business, John worked for Collins Construction, NoDak Contracting and finally retiring with Mayo Construction in the fall of 2002. During his long career, his family traveled with him to various job sites through many states where they made many lifelong friends.
John was a longtime member of Olivet Lutheran Church and the American Legion.
John is survived by his loving wife, Elaine C. Millar of 59 years; his five children, Jeffrey Millar (Vicki Stolz) Fisher, MN; Rick (Lisa) Millar, Fargo, ND; Debra (John) Genualdi, Grand Rapids, MI; John (Michelle) Millar, Chandler, AZ; DeNae Millar, Fargo, ND; his four grandchildren, Jackie (Anthony) Giannattasio, Megan Genualdi, Hanna Millar and Celia Millar; great-grandson, Giovanni Giannattasio; sisters, Joyce Chapman and Dorothy Traaseth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Julia Millar; sister, Frances Malterud; brothers, Clifford Millar; twin brother, James Millar; and Gerald Millar.
