Jane M. Guy, 69, of Amenia, ND, died Tuesday January 6th, 2014 in her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley after fighting a courageous two and a half year battle with Glioblastoma.
Jane Marie Bergman was born July 3rd, 1945 at St John’s Hospital in Fargo to Harry V and Mary (Moe) Bergman. ‘Janie’grew up on the family farm west and south of Argusville, ND along with her 2 sisters and brother. She attended a one room school house for grades 1-6 and graduated from Argusville High School in 1963. Right out of high school Jane spent 6 months attending Interstate Business College and then worked in the medical records department at St. Lukes’s Hospital for 5 years. She went on to Mary College in Bismarck earning her BS in nursing in 1973. She met Jim Guy that fall and they married in February of 1974. They farmed for 40 years west of Amenia and Hunter. Jane was involved in every aspect of the farm operation. She loved working in the field and was seen every summer and fall trucking grain down the road to the elevator with her kids riding co-pilot. She was very dedicated to her family making sure Jim always had his lunch in the field. She made sure her kids never missed a softball or baseball game or practice and often volunteered to keep score for games and league tournaments.
She served on the Central Cass School Board and Booster Club Board, spending countless hours at High School wrestling tournaments and basketball games. In 1991, Jim and Jane purchased a lake home on Lake Sallie near Jane’s mother and Jane loved being able to spend time playing cards with her mother and sisters. She was also able to take several trips with her sisters and mother to Australia and New Zealand and aboard the QE2 to Ireland and England. Jane was a consummate sports fan and enjoyed watching baseball, basketball, football, golf and fast pitch softball. She especially enjoyed watching the MN Twins, MN Vikings and the NDSU Bison, attending Bison football games for several years with Jim’s uncle.
She was active in summer golf leagues at Maple River and Edgewood and bowling leagues in Casselton for many years. She taught both of her kids to play golf at an early age and encouraged them to continue to play as they grew older. Jane loved playing cards and played the game of bridge with several different groups at least a couple times a week. On bridge league nights she would sit at the kitchen table dealing out 4 hands and practicing before she left for the night. Music was always an important part of Jane’s life. She took piano lessons from her Grandma Vivian while in elementary school and played the tenor saxophone in high school. She sang with the Sweet Adelines in Fargo when her children were young and was often seen sitting at the piano learning a new piece of music. In 2006, she, her brother and friends dusted off their musical instruments and joined the FM Golden Notes New Horizon Band, playing at various retirement homes throughout the region. This time around the alto saxophone was her instrument of choice. Jane loved quilting and cooking and she was always humming along to whatever tune was coming from her iPod, cassette tape or record player.
