James Paul "Jim" Haukedahl was born July 19, 1949, in Williston, North Dakota, to Margie and John Haukedahl, who lived in Wildrose, ND. He passed away Saturday, March 6, at Sanford Hospice House in Fargo with his family by his side. He was 71.
His family moved to Fargo in 1960 where he attended school and college. Following college, Jim enlisted in the Navy and spent two years on active duty in Adak, Alaska. He then joined the Naval Reserves and retired as Chief Petty Officer after 21 years.
When he returned to Fargo from Alaska, Jim worked at the Veterans Administration, then Scheels, and retired from Kallod Carpeting.
Jim will be remembered forever for his kindness and generosity. Jim was active at Hope Lutheran Church where he helped start the Veterans of Hope program, worked with the prayer cross ministry and in other areas. He volunteered at the Fargo Veterans Administration Hospital for many years, including service as an Honors Escort and in the No Veteran Dies Alone Program. He was active in the Disabled American Veterans, serving as Commander of the North Dakota DAV and being appointed Honorary Deputy Chief of Staff to the National Commander in recognition of his exemplary volunteer service. He served on the Board of Review for Boy Scouts earning their Eagle Scout badge. Jim was proud to be an Eagle Scout himself.
Jim loved spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, golfing and being at his lake home.
Jim is survived by his wife, Linda, and daughter, Erika, both of Fargo; brother, Mark (Cathy); niece, Kari (Ben); nephew, Brett (Amber) all of Minneapolis; special grandnephew; two special grandnieces; niece, Jennifer (Thomas); niece, Amy (Michael); nephew, Mark (Ling), all in Minnesota; as well as many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marjorie Haukedahl, grandparents, Ole and Kari Haukedahl, Paul and Olga Gillund.
A special thanks to the nurses and staff at the Sanford Hospice House for their wonderful care of Jim.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Sanford Hospice House, Hope Lutheran Church, or a charity of your choice.
FUNERAL SERVICE: 2:00 pm, Monday, March 15, 2021 at Hope Lutheran Church - North Campus, Fargo, ND. The service will be livestreamed and will be available to view later all on the funeral home website.
VISITATION: One hour prior to the funeral service.
BURIAL: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, ND
