James Crowe, 87, of Fargo, ND, died Friday, February 6, 2009, at his home in Fargo under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. James William Crowe, son of George and Georgia Crowe, was born January 2, 1922, in Fargo, ND. James attended Central High School and graduated from Kemper Military School in Boonville, Missouri, achieving the rank of Battalion Commander at the school the year he was commissioned in the US Army. For three years, he served as a liaison Captain training combat troops in the China- Burma- India Theater during WWII. He left the Army as a Major and married Marjorie Jeanne Thompson in Dallas, February 4, 1943. He graduated from Southern Methodist University and returned to join the family business, Bergstrom & Crowe Furniture Co., which had been founded by his father in 1908. The store expanded and prospered during his management. James played golf and enjoyed many Minnesota and Canadian fishing trips. He and Margie traveled the world in retirement including many trips to Asia, Africa, South America, Alaska and Europe. He loved his log cabin on Round Lake and his farm on the Red River. He was known for being generous, honest and loyal and proud of his Scottish heritage. James is a Past Master of Shiloh Masonic Lodge and a member of El Zagal Shrine. He was active for many years in the ND Retail Assn., the Kiwanis Club, and the Fargo Chamber of Commerce. He was a Director of the Fargo National Bank. James was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church serving as a Sunday school teacher, an Elder and a Trustee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Jeanne; his parents; one daughter, Georgia Lee; and his brother and his sister. He is survived by three sons and a daughter, Clinton (Debra) Robert (Janet), James Thomas (Kathy), and Carroll Jeanne (John Thune). He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jesse, Kristen, Harland and Christopher James and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
