Jack McCrory was born in Linton, ND, to Ted and Laura (Kyes) McCrory on February 5, 1933.
He lived with his mother in various locations, including Minneapolis, Tacoma, WA, Dodson, MT, Linton, and Bismarck, ND. While she worked, he would also live with his grandparents Wallace and Maria Kyes, who were a wonderful influence on him.
Jack’s favorite time was his experience in Montana on the ranch. What he learned during that time influenced him greatly and how he interacted with his children.
He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1952. He and his best friend Odie Bryant had numerous escapades.
He spent four years in the United States Air Force, reaching the rank of Staff Sargent, spending time in Japan, Korea, and Newfoundland. His best stories were from Newfoundland.
He married JoMarie Sailer in Bismarck in 1957. Legend has it that he had to sell his saddle to buy her engagement ring, which is a true show of commitment for a rancher. Jack would say he was happily married for 57 years; out of 65, that’s not bad.
He held a variety of occupations, from truck driver, Cass County Sheriff’s department, U.S. Marshall service, safety and security director, Livestock brand inspector, and juvenile relocation engineer (school bus driver).
Those who knew Jack were prepared for his quick wit and “Jack-isms”, such as at a restaurant or business, “You can’t complain about the service. There isn’t any” and “I just shoveled 3 inches of partly cloudy.”
He enjoyed team roping with his son, going to his track meets, and seeing his daughter’s theater productions (though her running in track would have been preferred). He also enjoyed working with horses and passed that knowledge to his children as well as many 4-H kids. He attended West Fargo and NDSU sporting events. He was part of NDSU Team Makers for several years, holding season tickets for football and basketball. He thoroughly enjoyed the Division II women’s basketball of the Amy Ruley and Kelli Layman years.
The family would like to thank the Fargo VA for their excellent care. We could not have asked for more.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Laura McCrory; father, Ted McCrory; in-laws, Ernest and Evelyn Sailer. He is survived by his wife, JoMarie; his son, Tim “Mic” and Pam McCrory; his daughter, Wendy McCrory and her partner Craig Mitchell; grandchildren, TJ, Jayci, Vicki and Brock McCrory, Mariah Clarin (Brayden Dickens); and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m., Monday, June 5, at Hope Lutheran Church - North in Fargo. Burial will be in Fargo National Cemetery in Harwood, N.D.
