Irvin Holman

July 6, 1925 — September 29, 2008

Irvin Carlisle Holman was born July 6, 1925, in rural Hatton, North Dakota, to Albert and Laura (Moen) Holmen. He attended a one-room grade school in Garfield Township and graduated from Hatton High School in 1943. He worked his way through NDAC, alternately farming in the Hatton area and living at the Sigma Phi Delta house, near campus. He earned his Architecture degree in 1950, and was thrilled to be named an NDSU honored alumnus in 1997. Irv served in the Air National Guard following school, stationed at George AFB in Victorville, CA. After his discharge, he went to work for Jack Kirk in Fargo. After a few years, Irv and Perry Clark started their own architectural firm, Clark and Holman, later, adding Richard Moorhead as partner. He retired in 1992. Irv served as president of the North Dakota AIA (American Institute of Architects), was a member of the Lake Agassiz Kiwanis Club, an avid NDSU Team Maker, a long time member of Sons of Norway and board member for multiple organizations. In the spring of 1950, Irv met Donna Jacobson during her visit to Hatton. For him, it was love at first sight. Married in 1952, his beloved Donna died in September, 2007. Irv treasured his family, his dear friends, and his church. He loved to travel, raise potatoes with his “hired man,” Al Fragodt, and restore antique farm machinery. Irv was a proud member of the 2-Cylinder Club. Irv died Monday, September 29, 2008, at MeritCare Palliative Care, Fargo, ND. He was preceded in death by son, Kirby Alan; a baby girl; and brother, Agnar. Irv is survived by son, Jon (Judy) Glyndon, MN; daughter, Kari (Keith) Thesing, Kindred, ND; son, Kurt (Debbie), Austin, TX; brothers, Albert (Alice) Holman, Grand Forks, ND; Orlo (Floss) Holman, Horsham, PA; sister-in-law, Gloria (Ken) Barrows, Cumberland, WI; cousin, Boyd (Sharon) Wermedahl, Fargo, ND; granddaughters, Sara and Lisa Holman, Glyndon, MN; Sydney and Kirsten Holman, Austin, TX; many nieces and nephews.
